Young Musicians

Açores

There are nearly one hundred philharmonic bands in the Azores.
Dating back to the 19th century, these bands were once rivals, but all were bound by the same purpose—music as a means of learning and community in an isolated archipelago.
Once composed solely of men, women now proudly play alongside them, keeping this deeply rooted tradition alive.
Today, during festivals on every island, the young musicians of the philharmonic bands play with pride, honouring their heritage through music.
