Brothers Alfredo and Agostinho Duarte represent the fifth generation of their family to run the Foz do Ribeiro Paper Mill.
Founded on the banks of the Arda River in 1844, this factory has dedicated itself exclusively to recycled cardboard production for over 40 years.
“We only use paper and water—nothing else,” they proudly state.
During winter, the force of the Arda River, a Douro tributary, makes the factory self-sufficient in energy. It can process up to three tonnes of recycled paper per day.
From the factory, you can spot otters and herons, living side by side with an industry powered by water and built on sustainability, giving new life to used paper.
