Pineapple

António Cavaco

Açores

The pineapple arrived in the Azores in the 19th century—as an ornamental plant.

Its success was so remarkable that it replaced the declining orange industry.

Today, it is grown in glass greenhouses whitewashed with lime, creating the ideal conditions for its development. During growth, the plants undergo a smoke-induced fertilisation process, a technique unique to the Azores’ pineapple cultivation.
