The Gigos (Basket Weavers)

Aldina e Aníbal

Douro

Adelina and Aníbal are a team.

In the garage of their home, they skillfully weave willow and reeds, shaping them into baskets and tools once essential to agriculture and daily life.

Though plastic has increasingly replaced this craft, they refuse to give up on a material that is organic, sustainable, and non-polluting.

The tools they use are over a century old, inherited from Adelina’s grandfather. They preserve the techniques passed down through generations, crafting “gigos”—traditional baskets still sold at local fairs.

At Octant Douro, you can discover Adelina and Aníbal’s handmade gigos and help keep this distinctive regional tradition alive.
