Grelha Salt Pans

João Pedro Grelha

Algarve

João Pedro Grelha is a descendant of Olhão’s salt makers.

At the turn of the millennium, he decided to revive his grandfather’s long-abandoned salt pans. Like farming, salt production demands hard work and dedication, but João embraced the challenge. Today, he not only produces salt but also welcomes visitors, as the salina offers a unique gateway to the Ria Formosa and its remarkable ecosystem.

In his small shop, João sells traditionally and sustainably harvested salt in various forms. And for those seeking a truly immersive experience, there’s the chance to float in the ‘Dead Sea’ of the Salina do Grelha and cover yourself in its mineral-rich mud—a ritual that’s as restorative for the soul as it is for the body, bringing you into harmony with the Ria Formosa.
