Riverside Walk Along the Douro

Douro

After the legendary breakfast at Octant, I decided to go for a walk along the Douro.

I left the hotel to join the pathway that would take me to the Pedorido beach, a couple of kilometers downstream.

The trail is a dirt track with some challenging parts but nothing to worry about if you are reasonably fit. To the left is a thick wood made mostly of eucalyptus, with some nice surprises on the way: oak and chestnut trees pop up here and there. The smell on this first day of Autumn/Fall is fresh, after some rain overnight.

To the right you can see the majestic Douro river, sometimes really close. Riverboats pass by bringing visitors upstream on the way to a probable wine tasting on a charming ‘quinta’.

Some 30 minutes later I arrived at the Pedorido beach, and back to civilization.

Here you can have a coffee or a beer and enjoy the view of the river or you can come straight back like I did.

Well worth it!
